This article analyzes Mexican notaries' activity focusing on the case of Jalisco. The approach used combines Pierre Bourdieus and Otto Maduro's notions of social field in addition to explaining certain characteristics of the Mexican law. This analysis serves to advance the sociology of law by tracing the features that arrange and provide a logical framework for notarial activity. It also shows some of the conflicts that have arisen in this social space.
