Abstract

FONDEVILA, Gustavo. Harrassment at the Workplace as a Form of Discrimination: A Qualitative Study of Perceptions. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2008, vol.70, n.2, pp.305-329. ISSN 2594-0651.

Mobbing is a negative behaviour among higher and lower ranks in a work organization. As a result of this, the victim is systematically attacked -directly or indirectly- for a long time and on a daily basis. This phenomenon has similar traits elsewhere in the world, but it is perceived differently according to cultural variations. In Mexico, the most extended workplace bullying is freezing, that is: to ignore the victim and surround him/she by a sense of emptiness. This is perceived differently according to the person's socioeconomic status. The low-income strata perceive such treatment as a way of social discrimination.

Keywords : workplace harassment; subjective perceptions; discrimination.
