Abstract

ESCOLANO ZAMORANO, Esther. Discrimination in a Meritocratic Milieu: Women Proffessors in the Spanish University. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2006, vol.68, n.2, pp.231-263. ISSN 2594-0651.

By means of the sociological analysis on the feminine professional reality in the Spanish universities milieu, this article puts into question the image of the academic institution as a context of equality between men and women. Through the combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, genre differences that characterize women's careers are revealed, as well as the contradictory perception of feminity that women have as to their own experience -and the traits of the imaginary made up about it. Reality shows that even a supposedly meritocratic market suffers from inequality in opportunities for men and women.

Keywords : university; sexual discrimination; genre; professional career; womanhood.
