Abstract

AGUIRRE, Benigno E.. Disasters in Latin América: Vulnerability and Resistance. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2004, vol.66, n.3, pp.485-510. ISSN 2594-0651.

This article provides a critical analysis of the way the concept of social vulnerability is used in certain studies of disasters in Latin America. Incorporating the capacity for resistance would produce a far more accurate evaluation of the phenomenon of the disasters that have an impact on the continent, lend greater importance to the processes of community mobilization, help establish more stable public administration models and confirm the usefulness of studies on the reaction of cultures to disasters.

Keywords : vulnerability; capacity for resistance; culture in the face of disasters; mitigation.
