Abstract

BOILS, Guillermo. The World Bank and the Development Policies in Mexico. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2004, vol.66, n.2, pp.345-367. ISSN 2594-0651.

This paper examines the financial support given by the World Bank through loans for development as the basis of its influence. For more than 25 years, it has lent more than 250 billion dollars to Mexican government only to finance housing programs. But the impact of the loans is transferred to the field of public policies and decisions, as well as to the design of social and political strategies. The aim to be more efficient in the enforcement of law and in the governmental organisms administration could be feasible; but when it implies the affordability of low income families borrowers, and specially when it runs against official subsidies, then it only brings about social exclusion.

Keywords : World Bank; housing policies; design of social and political strategies; law enforcement.
