Abstract

VAL CASTILLO, Otilia. Didactic considerations on the adjustment of redox reactions. Description of a hybrid adjustment method. Educ. quím [online]. 2023, vol.34, n.3, pp.16-31.  Epub Dec 20, 2023. ISSN 0187-893X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fq.18708404e.2023.3.84161.

The explanation, to high school students, of the adjustment of the equations that represent redox reactions, although to some people it may seem a merely mechanical process, is an ideal opportunity to relate previously studied chemical concepts. For this reason, it is proposed in this article to consider the rules for the assignment of the oxidation number and the adjustment of redox reactions, with a more didactic, contextualized and evidently chemical approach, emphasizing the transfer of electrons as the main reason for this type of reactions and proposing a hybrid adjustment method that precisely combines the two most used methods: the oxidation number method and the ion-electron method, with which it is also possible to predict in aqueous solutions, the acidic or basic medium in which the reaction takes place.

Keywords : Oxidation number assignment; adjust redox equations; modified ion-electron method; hybrid adjustment method: electron transfer adjustment.
