Abstract

CATALA, Rosa María; CHAMIZO, José Antonio  and  GARCIA-FRANCO, Alejandra. The impact of Mario Molina’s work on secondary and upper secondary education programs and materials in Mexico. Educ. quím [online]. 2021, vol.32, n.spe, pp.73-98.  Epub Feb 28, 2022. ISSN 0187-893X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fq.18708404e.2021.4.80334.

The results and discussion of a curriculum and methodologies search on the impact of Mario Molina´s work in secondary and high school education in Mexico from 1986 to date are presented. We found evidence of the educational importance given to the ozone depletion problem during the early years after the publication of his research in several countries where non conventional teaching approaches were emerging and where environmental issues were increasingly included. In our country, instead, the response was mild, with only second plane suggestions to incorporate the biography and work of the most relevant Mexican scientist national and internationally speaking. The educational and divulgation material found are presented in tables to facilitate and fasten the search and use by 9-12 teachers in terms to be used and get the most of them in their lessons where historical and reflection aspects are important in terms of the environmental and social challenges we face as humanity. With these findings we are pursuing that actual and future students generations get to know and recognize that the chemistry involved in the Montreal treaty and its successful application, was developed by a close scientist than trusted not only in his work but also in dialog as well to find answers and solving problems. He also devoted the rest of his life on various studies on air contamination in big cities and climate change.
