Abstract

GAVILAN-GARCIA, Irma C.; AVILA-ZARRAGA, J. Gustavo; BIRRICHAGA-BONILLA, Nadya I.  and  CANO DIAZ, G. Susana. Environmental acceptability factor assessment as suitability criteria in Organic Chemistry experiments. Educ. quím [online]. 2015, vol.26, n.1, pp.52-56. ISSN 0187-893X.

Teaching Organic Chemistry based on sustainability is a goal that goes beyond a subject in the curriculum of the career of Chemistry. Not just about playing techniques, but to promote a change of perspective in the teaching-learning process. We propose to study an isomerization reaction, an issue that is part of the core courses in Organic Chemistry, in which, during their experimental work, students must learn to judge the suitability of a chemical transformation, for which they must evaluate a number of parameters such as performance efficiency and environmental acceptability factor. The objective of this work is the study of different synthetic routes from a new approach, which allows students to judge the suitability of each route, using the production of fumaric acid as a model.

Keywords : environmental factor; fumaric acid; isomerization; organic chemistry.
