Abstract

CARRIAZO, Jose G.; SAAVEDRA, Martha J.  and  MOLINA, Manuel F.. Adsorption properties of an activated carbon and determination of Langmuir's equation using low cost materials. Educ. quím [online]. 2010, vol.21, n.3, pp.224-229. ISSN 0187-893X.

Among the most important limitation to carry out chemistry laboratory practices at many primary and secondary schools from some Latin American countries is the scarce availability of lab materials, chemical reagents, and appropriate equipments to make the required measurements. This work shows the use of low cost materials as a successful alternative to observe the adsorption phenomenon of colouring molecules on a solid. For it, an activated carbon with high adsorption capacity, from coconut shell, was prepared, and then the Langmuir equation for physical adsorption phenomena was determined using commercial refreshments as adsorbate.

Keywords : adsorption; activated carbon; Langmuir's equation; chemistry teaching.
