Abstract

MARTINEZ VAZQUEZ, Ana  and  VILLAGRAN MUNIZ, Mayo. Mientras el agua hierve, el nitrógeno... ¿qué?. Educ. quím [online]. 2008, vol.19, n.1, pp.50-55. ISSN 0187-893X.

The experiment that we present and discuss in this work is not new, but it is very interesting. It can be used as a demonstration of phase changes, with any group of students. The results of the experiment are spectacular and the explanation is not easy. For this reason, it can be used to stimulate analysis abilities in students. In order to find an explanation, students must think about models or representations using thermodynamics' concepts. In the experiment, boiling water coexists in the same box with freeze nitrogen. The only materials that are necessary are liquid nitrogen, water, a hermetic box and a pump. If materials are not available, it is possible to get a video that weve set up with the demonstration. If you are interested, send an e-mail to anal7mig@yahoo.com.mx and we will forward it to you.
