Abstract
MANTILLA VALBUENA, Silvia Cristina; CHACON HERRERA, Christian and ROMAN ROMER, Raúl. Toward building a cross-border integration region among five Caribbean Countries. Frontera norte [online]. 2016, vol.28, n.56, pp.5-33. ISSN 2594-0260.
This article aims to generate data to establish a proposal for a cross-border integration region among five countries that share territorial and maritime borders in the Caribbean: Colombia (San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina), Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Jamaica. A characterization of the border area was compiled by examining common geohistorical processes, settlement dynamics, and the ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious elements that consolidated the cultural unity of this Caribbean region. As a result of this characterization, a cross-border community was identified that, despite the divisions established by the five countries, justifies regional integration.
