Abstract

VERA VAZQUEZ, Rodrigo. Employment Performance by Sector in Cameron County, Texas, 2007-2011. Frontera norte [online]. 2015, vol.27, n.53, pp.147-176. ISSN 2594-0260.

In the 2007-2011 period the unemployment rate in the United States of America rose -4.4 percentage points. Despite this negative environment, Cameron County, Texas saw its unemployment rate drop, revealing its competitive edge. That "recession-proof" or "counter-cyclical" profile is explained by its service-oriented economy, but with strong indications of government intervention, pointing to a market failure. To shed light on economic performance by sector, the shift-share analysis of changing occupational distributions and employment growth was applied, using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Keywords : employment; shift-share; Cameron; Brownsville; Matamoros.
