Abstract

HUALDE ALFARO, Alfredo. Reflections on the link between social sciences and regional actors in Mexico. Frontera norte [online]. 2012, vol.24, n.48, pp.93-119. ISSN 2594-0260.

The link between social sciences and society has always been a matter of debate in Mexico. According to some academics, close collaboration with entrepreneurs or the government can subordinate scientific work to the interest of outsiders. In contrast, some social scientists consider that social science must contribute to solving the most challenging social problems. The debate has some peculiarities when seen from a regional perspective since relations between actors are usually more intense, academic institutions are weaker and dependence on political power may affect the quality of research. In the paper, the main debates on these topics are put forward and analyzed in an attempt to assess the possibility of a more balanced relationship.

Keywords : social sciences; regions; subordination; institutions; disciplines.
