Abstract

DE LEON ARIAS, Adrián. Cambio regional del empleo y productividad manufacturera en México: El caso de la frontera norte y las grandes ciudades: 1970-2004. Frontera norte [online]. 2008, vol.20, n.40, pp.79-103. ISSN 2594-0260.

Regional economic growth in Mexican manufacturing has been characterized by a faster growth in employment and output in the Northern Border region than in those in Largest Cities since 1980 s. In this article, these spatial dynamics are analyzed and related to their productivity growth. In particular, estimates of regional productivity from 1970 to 2004 are calculated. Results suggest that, until recently, employment grows faster in the Northern Border, but with a lower rate of productivity growth. Therefore, at least until 2004, regional change related to foreign trade liberalization did not seem facilitate faster economic growth for the whole Mexican economy.

Keywords : Mexico; economic growth; productivity; regional development; northern border.
