Abstract

ALFIE COHEN, Miriam. Environmental Non-governmental Organizations in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region. Frontera norte [online]. 2002, vol.14, n.27, pp.83-122. ISSN 2594-0260.

This article attempts to analyze the constitution, classification, objectives, and goals of environmental NGOs along the Mexico-United State border since the passage of NAFTA. Three border cities, Ciudad Juarez, Matamoros, and Tijuana, are taken as a point of departure, Like any other social actor, NGOs experience ongoing change and conflict, continuously modifying their actions and goals. Thus, we try to freeze images from moments during the research in order to detect transformations these social subjects have experienced. Our intention is to show that out of the environmental problems on the Mexico's northern border there has begun to appear a novel, dynamic, and bold social organization that must also confront old structures and politics tooted in daily practices.

Keywords : nongovernmental organizations; environmentalism; political decision-making; Mexico; U.S.-Mexico border region.
