Abstract
GARCIA SALAZAR, José Alberto and OMANA SILVESTRE, José Miguel. Fuentes de crecimiento del empleo en el sector agrícola del norte de México. Frontera norte [online]. 2001, vol.13, n.25, pp.71-93. ISSN 2594-0260.
Unemployment is one of the most serious problems that faces the rural areas of Mexico today. To determine how the change in the productive structure of the agricultural sector of Northern Mexico has affected rural employment in the region, the sources of the workforce's employment growth from 1991 to 1998 were calculated. The results indicate that in Baja California, Chihuahua and Sonora the change in the productive structure was positive for employment, while in Coahuila, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas it was negative. At the regional level, the change in the productive structure was unfavorable for employment. However, from 1991 to 1998, employment grew 7.5 million workdays because of the 382 thousand-hectare increase in cultivated area.
