Abstract

ZIRES, Margarita. Violencia, redes sociales y procesos de subjetivación política: El caso de #verfollow en Veracrúz, México. Argumentos (Méx.) [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.75, pp.119-144. ISSN 0187-5795.

Violence related to organized crime has increased throughout Mexico, particularly in some states like Veracruz, and is transforming everyday life. Given the lack of information available to the public about the violence occurring, due to official media censorship, virtual communication networks are emerging in many cities facilitated by users of Facebook and Twitter to share information about violence in order to avoid it. This article presents a study on the emergence of the hashtag #verfollow and its particular norms, beliefs and values. Another objective is to investigate in this virtual community the new forms of citizen participation that evolve beyond the sharing of information about violence into virtual social movements that feed political activism and even fuel political subjectivation processes offline as well.

Keywords : violence; online social networks; political subjectivation; #verfollow.
