Abstract

BARTRA, Armando. Rejuvenecer la protesta: Los movimientos sociales van a la escuela. Argumentos (Méx.) [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.74, pp.15-44. ISSN 0187-5795.

Moving away from the instrumental views of politics held by certain Anglo-Saxon sociology, the recent youth movements are here focused as performances and self-accomplished utopias, which can be grasped trough the concepts of grotesque and carnival. A review on recent rebellions, such as those of Mexico 2012 and Brazil 2013, allows us to point out some of their most prominent characteristics: imagination, humor and willpower, which confer these movements a visionary, grotesque, festive and merry temper -without ignoring the drawbacks of limited efficiency and lack of persistence that puts them in disadvantage against better structured protest actors. Nevertheless, it is concluded that recent youth movements are called to be an essential part of the new social rebelliousness.

Keywords : social movement; youth; carnival; grotesque; utopia; political imagination.
