Abstract

The first of two experiments was conducted to determine the effect of bacterial inoculation on five varieties of strawberry growing on two soils with contrasting pH (4.4 and 8.8). Shoot dry matter production, leaf area, root volume and shoot N, P and K contents were evaluated 125 days after transplanting. All varieties grown in pH 4.4 exceeded those grown in pH 8.8 in all variables. The varieties CP-06-15 and Festival were best adapted to alkaline pH conditions. A second experiment was established to compare two inoculation methods (direct application or root immersion) with phosphate solubilizing rhizobacteria in reducing the negative effects of alkaline pH on plant growth and fruit production and quality of the five strawberry varieties. Bacterial inoculation had no effect on shoot or root growth, with the exception of the variety least adapted to high soil pH (CP-LE-07) inoculated by root immersion in a bacterial suspension. Only in this variety, did inoculation increase fruit production. The averages of all varieties revealed that both types of bacterial inoculation reduced fruit number and weight.
