Abstract

The inoculation of important forest tree species with mycorrhizal fungi represents an important tool for plant production under greenhouse conditions. Recently, edibility has gained importance for ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECM) selection. This study evaluated the effect (alone or in combination) of inoculation with three ectomycorrhizal species (Hebeloma mesophaeum, Laccaria laccata and Suillus aff. pseudobrevipes) on the development of Pinus greggii, a subtropical native species of pine. The evaluated fungi are widely used as food and commercialized in Mexican traditional markets. In greenhouse conditions, 240 days after sowing, the dry weight of shoots and roots, the percentage of ectomycorrhizal colonization and the N contents were evaluated. In addition, a morphological characterization of ectomycorrhizal roots was conducted. At the end of the experiment, plants inoculated with ECM fungi had higher biomass production, colonization percentage and N content than non-inoculated plants. This phenomenon was observed regardless of the soil origin or condition of vaporization. The maximum values, in terms of both height and total dry weight, were observed in those plants inoculated with H. mesophaeum.
