Abstract

TENA-SUCK, Martha Lilia; SALINAS-LARA, Citlaltepetl; VEGA-OROZCO, Rosalba  and  REMBAO-BOJORQUEZ, Daniel. Cytological aspect of through crushing a transoperatory study in choroid plexus tumors. Arch. Neurocien. (Mex., D.F.) [online]. 2005, vol.10, n.4, pp.207-211. ISSN 1028-5938.

The cytological features of crush preparations of choroids plexus papilloma are fairly characteristic and reliable for the correct intraoperative diagnosis of brain tumors helping to determine the appropriate neurosurgical procedure. Intraoperative smears of the tumor were hyper cellular, disclosing loosely cohesive and single epithelial cells, some with mitotic activity and moderate anisonucleosis. The background displayed a characteristic fibrillary material. In this series the lesions were located in the fourth ventricle in 5 patients, third ventricule in 3, pontocerebelar angle in 2 and 1 in lateral ventricule. Target localization was based on the CT sean. Histological verification was base<;l on hematoxilin-eosin staining. 8 were choroids plexus papiloma and 2 with choroids plexus carcinoma. A diagnosis of choroids plexus tumors can be made intraoperative with the aid of smear cytology in conjunction with frozen section, assisting intraoperative management. The definitive diagnosis is in histological section.

Keywords : brain neoplasm; choroids plexus tumors; crush cytology; intraoperative study.
