Abstract

Jasmonic acid (AJ) is a widely used plant growth regulator. In recent years the main alternative for its production has been based on the use of different microorganisms. The widely known is Botryodiplodia theobromae fungus. In this study the ability of a Botryodiplodia theobromae strain, isolated from tropical areas of southeastern Mexico, to produce the AJ was evaluated. Production was assayed on submerged culture fermentation (FCL) in modified Miersh broth and on solid-state fermentation (FCS) using cane bagasse as support. In both cases pH changes, total sugars concentration and AJ kinetics were determined. In the case of FCL biomass formation was quantified, while in FCS moisture levels were evaluated. Results showed FCS advantages in comparison with FCL: maximum AJ level achieved on FCS was 3 times higher than in FCL, and the time corresponding to AJ maximum production was three times lower. This demonstrates that FCS is a better alternative for biotechnological production of jasmonic acid by strain Botryodiplodia theobromae.
