Abstract

MONTES-BELMONT, Roberto. Chemical diversity in plants against phytopathogenic fungi. Rev. Mex. Mic [online]. 2009, vol.29, pp.73-82. ISSN 0187-3180.

An outlook of knowledge of the relationship between chemical diversity defense mechanism in higher plants was reviewed. Chemical structure and properties of plant species are well know in just a minimal percentage of all plants of the world. Coevolutive process plant-fungi has allowed the development of complex and varied defense systems with both preformed antifungal compounds and induced substances by adverse factors. Between both groups of compounds there are not clear differences in chemical structure. All plants that had been studied showed that fungal properties are worldwide and ecological factors had been determinants in qualitative and quantitative chemical production. Until now only a few antimicrobial compounds are well know their modes of action. It is not rejected the possibility to develop in the future commercial fungicides from natural products with good perspectives in commercial market.

Keywords : Antifungal metabolites; phytoalexins; inhibitins; phytoanticipins; defensins.
