Abstract

PAREDES P., Juan Pablo  and  OTAROLA ARRIAGADA, Catalina Victoria. The Civic Cry in the Struggle for the Right to Education: The Moral and Emotional Framework of Student Mobilization in Chile (2011-2013). Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2019, vol.34, n.98, pp.253-288.  Epub Mar 09, 2021. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article deals with student mobilizations in Chile from the viewpoint of their ability to produce signifiers based on the actors’ chants and shouts; the aim is to review how public education is defined and also formulate a series of moral and emotional arguments regarding the justification of the process of demonstrating and the demand for free education. The author uses the frameworks of collective action -mainly the work of William Gamson- to show the movement’s ability to offer interpretative packages around the axes that define the framework of the mobilization. Methodologically, he centers on the statements (slogans, chants, shouts, and banners) produced during the marches using frame analysis. Lastly, the article concludes by evaluating the analysis of moral and emotional elements, indignation as the basis for the feeling of injustice, the pride and confidence as the basis for agency, which configures the framework of the student mobilizations in Chile.

Keywords : social movements; framing; Chile; student conflict; free education.
