Abstract

VIEYRA BAHENA, Pedro José. A New Type of Individualism?: The Specificities of Mexican Individualism. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2015, vol.30, n.85, pp.65-100. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article shows the way in which some of the main characteristics of Western individualism are manifested in Mexico in the beginning of the twenty-first century. Taking into account the mechanisms of Western and Mexican modernities, the author explains how, parallel to the adoption of the neoliberal model, a psychic, cultural configuration emerged that fostered a new individualism characterized by the quest for psychic and emotional gratifications that would materialize mainly in family relations, a concern for having a job that would allow for family well-being, a lack of interest in public affairs, and a constant feeling of anxiety and uncertainty.

Keywords : individualism; Mexico; modernity; neoliberal.
