Abstract

VENDRELL FERRE, Joan. ¿Corregir el cuerpo o cambiar el sistema? La transexualidad ante el orden de género. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2009, vol.24, n.69, pp.61-78. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article explores the implications of the contemporary trans movement's assimilationalist orientation under the aegis of the state's medical-legal apparatus. Based on an analysis of transexuality as a form of the gender mainstream specific to our culture, the author looks at the consequences of confusing gender identity with biological sex; the contradictions inherent in the idea of it being possible to have a body of one sex and actually being another; and the difficulties that choosing to correct a "wrong" body poses for a transgender alternative to the existing gender order.

Keywords : transexuality; mainstream; gender order; sex; intersexuality; body; bio-medicine; assimilationism; dissidence.
