Abstract

DORE, Emilie. La marginalidad urbana en su contexto: modernización truncada y conductas de los marginales. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2008, vol.23, n.67, pp.81-105. ISSN 2007-8358.

The author begins by reviewing the terms of the scientific debates about the issue of urban marginality, underlining the need to renew thinking on the subject. She states that marginality results from uneven modernization and that, in the case of Peru, this imbalance is due to the incorporation of racist dynamics in the advances of modernization. She analyzes the behavior and perceptions of the inhabitants of a Lima shantytown, observing that they reflect the contradictions of Peruvian society because they are marked by social fragmentation, distrust, and identity problems.

Keywords : Lima; marginality; migration; modernization; racism; social fragmentation.
