Abstract

VIRTANEN, Pirjo Kristiina. Los procesos de modernización en la Amazonia brasileña: Lógicas sociales de los pueblos indígenas y la interacción entre campos sociales. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2008, vol.23, n.67, pp.51-80. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article attempts to contribute new elements to the discussion about the ways modernization affected the experience of the world of Amazonian indigenous groups, and how local interpretations of modernization transformed the processes themselves. It focuses on the interaction among the contemporary social spheres of Manchineri communities: the ethno-political movements, ethnic groups, and shamanism. The author analyzes how they have generated changes in their social organization, education, and ritual practices both on the reserve and in the urban areas where they live.

Keywords : Amazonia; Manchineri; social spheres; new social roles; education; ritual practices.
