Abstract

MESTRIES, Francis. Entre la migración internacional y la diversificación de cultivos. Los pequeños productores de café en dos localidades de Veracruz. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2006, vol.21, n.60, pp.75-107. ISSN 2007-8358.

This study about small coffee producers in central Veracruz demonstrates that the migration of peasants and agricultural laborers is the result of economic stagnation, the coffee crisis and government withdrawal from this sector. It analyzes the factors behind migration, networks of families and people from the same region or town and human smuggling rings. The author points out that many social reproduction strategies are used to deal with the crisis, from the diversification of crops to migration, but that coffee cultivation and people’s attachment to their communities continue to be important for migrants and their families, who use remittances to build up their productive patrimony at home.

Keywords : migration to the United States; coffee producers; agricultural economy; family networks; social reproduction; cash remittances.
