This article seeks to contribute to urban studies from the perspective of communication. First, we will explain why this field of knowledge is significant for analyzing current urban processes. Then, we will briefly outline the concepts of habitat and inhabiting before using a case study, to show how socio-urban transformations affect the ways of appropriating and giving territories meaning. Specifically, we will analyze the ways the floods on April 2, 2013 in La Plata, Argentina and the subsequent relocation of a settlement modified the ways of inhabiting of its residents.
