Urban law is a vital facet of urban studies because it allows analysis of State intervention in urban development, as well as the legal structures for planning and regulating human settlements. Public recreation green areas in urban zones provide myriad environmental and social benefits. The present study is focused on identifying and analyzing the laws, regulations and development programs linked to the presence and conservation of green and forested spaces in public recreation areas in the city of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. These legal instruments’ wording, competencies, omissions and contradictions can favor or restrict green area creation and conservation.
