The bird species richness of four different habitats in the Tuxpan sub-basin, Guerrero, Mexico was analysed. A total of 105 bird species were recorded, of which 67.6% were resident and 32.3% were migratory. The richness estimators for the resident birds suggested that species are still missing from the inventory, Of the species recorded, nine are endemic and four are quasi-endemic to Mexico. Based on the Mexican law -NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010-, three species are under special protection and two are considered threatened. The tropical deciduous forest presented the greatest richness (77 species), followed by secondary vegetation (59 species), oak forest (50 species) and the water body (23 species). This last habitat, together with the tropical deciduous forest, presented the greatest number of exclusive species. The largest proportion of species was ranked in the categories of uncommon and rare, with differences in the abundance of birds recorded for the water body with respect to the secondary vegetation. The carnivorous and insectivorous species were the better represented in terms of species richness, but differences were observed between the water body guilds and the other vegetation types. The study area presented a greater similarity in species composition with geographically near areas. The results of this study indicate that a greater effort should be devoted to the inventory of birds in areas that have been neglected such as the Balsas basin in Guerrero, which is important in terms of conservation.
