Abstract

NEXTICAPAN-GARCEZ, A et al. Population changes and damages caused by the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda JE Smith) in maize cultivated in a continuous production system affected by hurricane Isidore. Universidad y ciencia [online]. 2009, vol.25, n.3, pp.273-277. ISSN 0186-2979.

An experiment was set up from 2001 to 2003 with traps and the sexual pheromone Trece® in order to determine the population pattern and the damage caused to leaves by Spodoptera frugiperda in the Continuous Maize Production System (SPCM). The population pattern of S. frugiperda adults was different throughout the years of study, although not significantly so, and neither was the average foliar damage (DFP) or the annual precipitation. The capture of adults during June-September 2001 corresponded to 81 % of the yearly collection, while in 2002 49 % of the total was collected from October to December, and in 2003 52% of the adults were collected from January to April. The greatest capture of specimens was correlated with the leaf damage over the three years. The data are discussed in relation to the impact of Hurricane Isidore that affected the area in September 2002.
