Abstract

SANCHEZ ULLOA, Cristóbal Alfonso. Civic Celebrations in State Building: Campeche, 1857-1862. Secuencia [online]. 2023, n.115, e2043.  Epub Mar 17, 2023. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i115.2043.

This article explores the civic celebrations held in the city of Campeche between 1857 and 1862 to determine the role they played in the state building process. The author suggests that these acts were part of the political culture of those who were engaged in this process, whereby they sought to legitimize their authority, justify the emancipation of Campeche, and show that the state had existed, de facto, since 1858, even though it lacked the recognition of the Mexican government. This case allows us to reflect on the use of civic celebrations in politics in the mid-19th century in Mexico, in a context of the formation of new political entities. At the same time, it enables us to observe some of the transformations prompted by the Reform Laws in celebratory practices, in a place that remained on the sidelines during the 1858-1861 civil war.

Keywords : Campeche; civic celebrations; liberalism; Reform; political culture.
