Abstract

MEYER, Eugenia. The Challenges of Memory. Secuencia [online]. 2018, n.101, pp.256-272. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i101.1611.

The purpose of the text is to reflect on the permanent challenge of memory in the work of history and the historian as a builder of historical versions of the past. It contains three important points: the personal testimonials of those who were protagonists or observers of political, economic or social events in the past reflect the plurality of visions about an event. Testimonial evidences as a fundamental part of oral history enrich and nourish documentary information, complementing rather than replacing it. Lastly, emphasis is placed on the construction of a multiple, reformable and transformable history, which can permanently be written, a history that contrasts with the mythical, official vision of history on request.

Keywords : oral history; memory; social history; Mexico.
