Abstract

ALCALA FERRAEZ, Carlos. Population in the City of Campeche: Sources and Trends, 1810-1861. Secuencia [online]. 2015, n.92, pp.83-112. ISSN 2395-8464.

This article seeks principally to analyze the growth trends of the population of the city of Campeche and associated factors between 1810 and 1861. A revision was undertaken of the sources recording the number of inhabitants, the description of certain events that had an impact on these figures and the evolution of birth, death and marriage rates during this period. The population of the port was calculated using two assessments. The first was between 18 000 and 20 000 inhabitants between 1810 and 1833, and a later one was 15 000 persons. The 1833 cholera epidemic was the event that had the greatest impact on the town.

Keywords : Campeche; census; epidemics; agricultural crisis; civil war.
