Abstract

GUILLEMETTE, Martin. An Andean Interpretation of the Mexican Revolution, from the Periphery: The Case of Arequipa, Peru (1910-1930). Secuencia [online]. 2014, n.90, pp.97-119. ISSN 2395-8464.

The result of a doctoral comparative study of the national contexts of Mexico and Peru in late 19th century and early 20th century, the article proposes an analysis of the reception and impacts of the Mexican Revolution in Peru, to explain the influence of this event at several levels -regional, national and continental. From this perspective, the study analyzes the journalistic discourse in Arequipa regarding the Mexican events of the 1910s and 1920s. It seeks to demonstrate how in Arequipa, a city renowned for its historical struggle for autonomy and intellectually dynamic elites, the Mexican Revolution was used as an argument to reconsider the Peruvian nation, and the place of the provinces in the national project.

Keywords : Mexican revolution; Peru; Arequipa; regionalism; regional identity; centralism.
