Abstract

PALACIO MONTIEL, Celia del. ...Living midway between a village and city in the luminous, smiling city... Everyday life in Guadalajara in the 1930s. Secuencia [online]. 2011, n.80, pp.131-158. ISSN 2395-8464.

The purpose of the article is to provide a sketch of everyday life in the city of Guadalajata -the epicenter of various events of national importance- in the early 1930s, a moment of transition marking rhe start of the rapid modernization that continued uninterruptedly during the 20th century. Everyday life was affected by various events from the previous decade at all levels, local -repercussions of the Cristero war in the region-, national -the murder of Obregón, and Calles's government- and international -the economic crisis of 1929- Everyday life, however, was enhanced by the new forms of public entertainment and the presence in Guadalajara of a group of intellectuals that would subsequently become famous both nationally and internationally. This picture of everyday life in Guadalajara was drawn from several of the newspapers published there at the time as well as some of the available literary sources.
