Abstract

MOLINA JIMENEZ, Iván. Communists and Advertising in Costa Rica: The Case of the Trabajo Newspaper (1937-1948). Secuencia [online]. 2010, n.77, pp.61-87. ISSN 2395-8464.

In 1937, the leaders of the Costa Rican Communist Party began to publish advertisements in their weekly newspaper Trabajo to obtain funds that would contribute to their financing. The inclusion of advertising involved a break away from the cultural construction of this newspaper as an alternative organ that was different from the so-called "bourgeois press." The advertisements, however, failed to become a key source of income, since they reduced the space available for information and propaganda and promoted values, worldviews and lifestyles that were diametrically opposed to those that the Left strove to spread among popular urban and rural sectors.

Keywords : Communism; Advertising; Press; History; Costa Rica.
