Abstract

RODRIGUEZ, Miguel. The Sacred Heart of Jesus: Images, Messages and Cultural Transfers. Secuencia [online]. 2009, n.74, pp.145-168. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i74.1079.

Worship of the Sacred Heart has been present in all kinds of printed work since the 19th century, but the amount of devotion it has elicited worldwide cannot be reduced to its purely religious nature, since one must also consider its political dimension. This phenomenon has attracted notice in the field of cultural transfers between Europe and America and this paper forms part of a comparative history project that seeks to analyze it in various contexts, specifically, it tries to show, that together with its universal dimension, the symbolism of the Sacred Heart acquires partic-ular features in every Latin American country. Likewise, the second part of this paper attempts to show how the instructions that came from Europe were shaped by an independent Latin America, whose links with the papacy during the century following the wars of independence were complicated.

Keywords : Sacred Heart; Worship; National Consecration; Symbolism; Liberalism; The Messenger of the Heart ofJesus; Church; State; Vatican Council II.
