Abstract

The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of mining activity on vegetation patterns in a specific period, since mining and smelting activities in western Mexico have a long history dating back to pre-Columbian times. Because of this activity, many types of remains can be found, from abandoned mines and waste deposits, to slag from the smelting process (querendas) and tailings deposits. However, although there is abundant cultural evidence of mining-related activities (pre-Columbian, colonial, and contemporary), the environmental damage caused by them has not been quantified, especially the effects on the soil and vegetation in the long term. On the other hand, the presentation of this methodological study allows us in archeology to assess areas of metallurgical activity through the state and degree of contamination present in the vegetation.
