Abstract

CASTANON SUAREZ, Mijaely Antonieta  and  PUNZO DIAZ, José Luis. Reviewing Research on Ceramics in Tingambato, Michoacán. A Proposal of Petrographic Characterization. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2017, n.72, pp.145-164. ISSN 2007-2392.  https://doi.org/10.22134/trace.72.2017.58.

This paper presents a review of ceramics studies in Tingambato, Michoacán, trying to solve the problem of incommensurability between them; it also proposes a first approach to the petrographic characterization of ceramics. For the analysis, fluorescence techniques were applied by ultraviolet light induction and petrographic analysis with thin films; the first was used as an experimental test to identify differences in a sample large enough to reduce it to a viable number for lamination, which was successful. Petrography on thin films offers information about mineralogical composition, particularities in the manufacturing technique and a first approximation that allows proposing regions of materials extraction. This gives a new perspective on the manufacturing processes used by the potters of this important archaeological site.

Keywords : Tingambato; ceramics; archeometry; fluorescence; petrography.
