Abstract

RIOS-PENA, Julio Ubiidxa  and  FURLAN, Alfredo. Violence and school. Experiences of middle school students in Oaxaca. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2024, vol.45, n.177, pp.200-218.  Epub Apr 05, 2024. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v45i177.1016.

Violence is a problem that extends into different areas of social life. The school is not exempt from this phenomenon, since different practices are manifested inside and outside it that disrupt the students' daily lives. In this regard, this research revolves around the experiences that high school students in the state of Oaxaca experience around certain violent situations. Through a series of interviews carried out between 2022 and 2023, young people's perspectives on violence and school are shown, a relationship with important nuances. The conception of the school institution as a space that, despite the violence it houses, provides security and protection against the dangerous and untamed violence that stalks young people once they leave the school walls is highlighted. For the students who participated in this work, the school remains a place of certainty and meaning.
