Abstract

SIGUENZA OROZCO, Salvador. The Normal Rural School of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Comitancillo, Oaxaca (1929-1935). Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2023, vol.44, n.176, pp.112-135.  Epub Jan 19, 2024. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v44i176.998.

In Mexico, the post-revolution government promoted the creation of Normal and peasant schools to train teachers to work in the peripheral areas of the country, mainly rural and indigenous ones. In this context, the article exposes the foundation and operation process of a Normal school in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, in the years 1929-1935. Based on the analysis of original documents, the criteria for the institution establishment, its objectives, and entrusted tasks, fundamentally of a social nature, are proposed. Its principal activities and operating difficulties are indicated, as well as information about the teaching staff and students.

Although the text addresses the formative period of an institution in which many teachers were trained, the sources of information are fundamentally institutional. Despite being a project that was built regionally and tried to involve the communities of the region, economic difficulties caused it to be transferred to the federal government in a few years.
