Abstract

CRUZ, Enrique Normando  and  KOELTZSCH, Grit Kirstin. Fandango as Performance of the Old Regime (Jujuy, 18 th -19 th centuries). Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2020, vol.41, n.163, pp.138-161.  Epub June 18, 2021. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v41i163.803.

This article analyses the fandango as a characteristic practice during the Old Regime that developed a specific form in the 18th and early 19th centuries. In the fandango, actors, audience, and the social scenario combined with elements both private and public, the State, the mestizo population, and dances and music in a performance that had ramifications for both political life and gender relationships. In order to describe the salient features of this performance in the Americas, we present a case study based on unpublished historical documents from a city located south of Charcas and north of Río de la Plata, and compare it to accounts by Americanists over the length and breadth of the Indian world.

Keywords : Dance; power; gender; people; council.
