Abstract

MACHUCA GALLEGOS, Laura. Appeals to the King by Aspirants to Positions as Sub-Delegates in Yucatán, 1796-1818. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2019, vol.40, n.158, pp.94-128.  Epub Dec 31, 2019. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v40i158.359.

This article analyzes petitions sent to the Secretary of State and the Office of Grace and Justice by would-be sub-delegates in Yucatan between 1796 and 1818. The procedure involved sheds light on the motivations and administrative careers of these aspirants who sought positions in the colonial administration, or extensions of their tenures in office. These petitions were also a kind of statement, or record, of merits and services rendered that, even though they basically reproduced standardized formulas, can reveal local problems related to the functioning of the system of intendencias.

Keywords : petitions; sub-delegates; Spanish monarchy; merits and services; intendencias; Yucatán.
