Resumen

GASPARELLO, Giovanna. Analysis of Conflict and Violence in Cherán, Michoacán. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2018, vol.39, n.155, pp.77-112. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v39i155.289.

In the municipality of Cherán, Michoacán, 2011 is remembered as the year in which the community organized a broad social mobilization to confront organized crime, stop the illegal extraction of timber by criminal groups, and bring about a transformation of local government. This paper describes the principle features and causes of the conflict in which the people of Cherán are still involved, and the different aspects of violence (criminal, agrarian and political) that led to this confrontation. Using the models proposed by Galtung (2003) and Lederach (2009) for analyzing violence and conflict, the paper examines the epicenter and underlying conflict, which is rooted in the inequality that exacerbates the internal social fracturing of the local community.

Palabras llave : violence; conflict; organized crime; indigenous peoples; Michoacán.
