Abstract

GONZALEZ FLORES, José Gustavo. The 1780s: a fateful decade in a parish of Michoacán. epidemics and their demographic consequences in Taximaroa, 1780-1790. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2016, vol.37, n.146, pp.83-118. ISSN 2448-7554.

In the second half of the 18th century, recurrent epidemics and population displacements slowed demographic growth and, at times, triggered decreases in the number of inhabitants. Focused on the case of Taximaroa, a parish in the eastern area of the bishopric of Michoacán, this study concludes that the decade of 1780 witnessed a contraction of the population in general, followed by a marked decline of the indigenous population and an accelerated process of miscegenation (mestización) in the parish.

Keywords : Taximaroa; epidemics; smallpox; mortality; migration.
