Abstract

GOMEZ MARTINEZ, Marta. Didactic Keys in an Astronomy Manual: Sacrobosco's De Sphaera Mundi. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2013, vol.34, n.135, pp.39-58. ISSN 2448-7554.

This article analyzes those structural and conceptual aspects of a didactic nautre that appear in Castilian translations of Sacrobosco's De Sphaera Mundi, the astronomy manual used in universities in Western Europe from the 13th through the 17th centuries. The choices that the translators offer in relation to the structure of the book, the disposition of its contents, and the selection of a specialized lexicon, reveal the manual's didactic keys; that is, the author's intention to transmit specialized knowledge. Because De Sphaera Mundi gathers the basic knowledge concerning the universe that had circulated since Antiquity, it is a fundamental manual that provides an introduction to the study of the science of the heavens and stars.

Keywords : didactics; history of astronomy; history of translation; specialized lexic.
