Abstract

MINO GRIJALVA, Manuel. The Productive Dimensions of Textile Mills in Puebla and Mexico in 1597. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2013, vol.34, n.134, pp.195-208. ISSN 2448-7554.

This essay presents a view of the productive dimensions of textile mills in Puebla and Mexico City in the late 16th century. The principal source is a "Relación" of textile mills with accounts of the operations that existed in Puebla and Mexico City -and the surrounding areas- the number of looms installed, and the diverse kinds of textiles produced: cloths, felt, and sackcloth, both fine and plain. The document offers but a snapshot of the composition of the mills because it covers only one year; however, it makes a valuable contribution because the production figures are accompanied by market prices.

Keywords : textile mills; production; textile workers.
